Abstract

This paper focuses on "zero-gap" alkaline water electrolysis with high current density and excellent stability, summarizing recent research progress. We systematically discuss how catalytic activity, electronic conductivity, hydrophilicity, and pore diameter can be optimized to enhance the performance of catalysts/electrodes and diaphragms. Additionally, we propose the influence mechanisms and optimization strategies for industrial-scale applications. Notably, our comprehensive research reveals that electrode pore diameter exhibits completely opposite mechanisms in enhancing bubble transport and the catalyst's intrinsic activity. Diaphragms with improved hydrophilicity significantly reduce cell ohmic resistance. Finally, based on polarization mechanisms, we discuss future prospects and ongoing efforts in this field.
